William Lucas Root was born in聽Iowa in 1919. In 1940, he graduated聽from Iowa State University with distinction聽as a top student in electrical engineering.聽He then went on to MIT, where聽he earned the master鈥檚 degree in electrical聽engineering in 1943. His education聽was interrupted by World War II; he聽served as a Marine officer until the end聽of the war. Returning to MIT, he earned聽a doctorate in mathematics in 1952.

On receiving his doctorate, Bill聽joined the Analysis Group at Lincoln聽Laboratory, becoming its head from聽1959 to 1961. It was during his stay at聽Lincoln Laboratory that Bill first聽became involved in the statistical聽analysis of radar signals. 聽From 1962 until his retirement in聽1987, Bill was a professor of aerospace聽engineering at the University of Michigan.

His reputation as a leading聽researcher brought him invitations for聽visiting professorships at the University聽of California at Berkeley, Michigan聽State University, Cambridge University,and the Mathematics Research Center聽at the University of Wisconsin.聽In recognition of his research, Bill聽was made a Fellow of the 老澳门开奖直播 in 1965.

He was further recognized as a National聽Science Foundation Senior Postdoctoral聽Fellow (1970). In 1986, as Shannon聽Lecturer, he received the highest honor聽bestowed by the 老澳门开奖直播 Professional聽Group on Information Theory at the聽time.
